In the season of giving, Starpoint Foundation will be the recipient of several fundraisers by organizations in the area.

During the Loaf ‘n Jug “Stars for Starpoint” fundraiser, customers buy paper stars for $1 to hang around the different stores this month.

So far, “we have somewhere around 250 to 300” stars that have already been sold to customers in Cañon City, said Loaf ‘n Jug store manager Rachelle Lockhart.

At the end of the month after the fundraiser is over, the district office will donate an additional $500 along with the money from the stars.

Elsewhere, store manager Laura Ellis said the store in Florence had sold 123 stars.

“We’re hanging them on the front windows along with the poster” about the fundraiser, she said.

Last year, the Cañon City store raised $436 in December.

Other stores involved are Loaf ‘n Jug stores in Buena Vista and Salida.

The fundraiser is a big help because “all the money goes directly to Starpoint programs,” said foundation director Ron Hinkle. “We may designate the money to finish off the landscaping on our Eighth Street office.”

The project includes a recreational area, a barbecue, landscaping and privacy fence.

The fundraiser started with the previous district manager, Hinkle said.

“We have a new district manager,” who is behind the fundraiser, Hinkle said. “We’re just excited that Loaf ‘n Jug has chosen Starpoint for its charity of choice.”

The second fundraiser for Starpoint was conducted by Florence St. Benedict’s Knights of Columbus No. 1225 through its Tootsie Roll Drive.

By selling Tootsie Rolls, the council raised $690.

“This is our second year for our council” to host a Tootsie Roll drive, said Joe Sober, Grand Knight. “We have chosen Starpoint because it needs it more than anybody else.”

Hinkle also expressed his thanks to the council representatives for supporting the foundation.
