Line'em Up: Starpoint starts bowling league

Bowling can be a treat for almost everyone.
For the Starpoint consumers, it is not only fun, it can be challenging.
Starpoint employee and co-organizer Darlene Globoker said the foundation had established its own league with nine teams consisting of 36 players and four substitutes playing on Tuesdays for 12 weeks at Cañon Lanes.
"We started" Jan. 26, she said. "We'll be doing an awards ceremonies with trophies, just like regular leagues. The only difference is we're not sanctioned. We're doing it strictly for Starpoint."
The idea began when 88 bowlers practiced for eight weeks to participate in the Special Olympics in Pueblo; however, only one or two teams were invited. Starpoint pulled out and sponsored its own Special Olympics at Cañon Lanes.
"Everyone got a trophy," Globoker said. "We had a snack for them and all the trophies. It was fantastic."
Since then, Starpoint employees decided to organize a league so the consumers can participate on a weekly basis.
"We've had several of them bowl 200," Globoker said. "It's just excellent exercise for them. They all get along. We don't have any fighting. It's something they can all enjoy."
Celebrating their 25th anniversary, Cindy and Bucky Wyatt said they looked forward to bowling.
"I love it," she said. "I'm on the Loaf 'n Jug team. I learned how to bowl from Starpoint."
The couple planned to go out for dinner later to continue the celebration of their anniversary.
Although it takes a lot of employees for the consumers to bowl, it is worth it, said Starpoint employee and co-organizer Tony Adams.
When the consumers hit a strike, they "celebrate even if it's someone on the opposing team," he said. "They enjoy bowling very much. Just like everybody else, they have their good days and bad days" when it comes to hitting the bowling pins.
But what is "really nice is they cheer for each other when one of them does well," Adams said. "When we do this, it's a group activity."
And just like other leagues, the consumers will arrive Tuesdays at Cañon Lanes, where they will participate in league bowling for the next 10 weeks.
Sponsors are Loaf 'n Jug, which sponsored two teams, money from Starpoint consumers' pop machine, Subway, Palace Drug Store, High Country Bank, Sonny's Ace Home Center and one of Starpoint's employee teams.
